How Instant Ramen Became an Overnight Success

Most people associate ramen with broke college students, but the story behind these instant noodles is far more surprising. The instant dinner is the brainchild of Momofuku Ando, a Japanese businessman who was on a mission to solve a post-WWII hunger crisis.

A Spirited Journey to Kyoto’s Most Isolated Restaurant

Fuyoh Kobayashi is a master calligrapher and owner of the famed Shoraian restaurant in Japan. Located in Arashiyama, Kyoto, Shoraian is perched on the edge of a mountain overlooking the Oi River and can only be reached by foot. To call Shoraian simply a restaurant sells it short. Visitors come as much for the celebrated food as they do for the sense of peace that this spiritual, otherworldly setting offers.

So when I went diving in the ocean for the first time, I was surprised at how rich the soundscape around me was: you could hear fish nibbling on coral and squid swimming past you. But more than anything, you could almost always hear the hum of a boat engine. It's part of a big problem in the ocean right now. Ship traffic noise has doubled every decade since the 1960s — and it's wreaking havoc on marine life.

This video was made in collaboration with Twenty Thousand Hertz, a podcast that dives deep into all ...
